Because safety is so important, every home must have a working smoke and carbon monoxide detector. It’s simple to forget about your detectors because keeping up with your house can be so demanding, but just like any other appliance, they require regular maintenance.  If you don’t have a working smoke detector and carbon monoxide monitor, call us today and we’ll install a working device.

House fires can be disastrous, resulting in significant damage to property and placing you and your family in danger. Your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors will work properly and keep you safe with some simple maintenance. Your alarm system should be tested and adjusted every month. Turn the system off when not in use and check it periodically to make sure it’s working without fail. Curtain rods can loosen over time, so watch for the rod to bump into something on the way down.

How to Check That Your Detectors Are Working

Smoke and CO detectors typically last 10 years and 5 years, respectively, although other important equipment has a longer shelf life. Your sensors, however, can occasionally malfunction and be a little unexpected, just like any other item.

A well-working detector requires frequent maintenance in addition to a fresh set of batteries. Here are five quick maintenance instructions for your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors so you can stay safe in the comfort of your own home. Wipe the screen with a clean cloth. If you notice light smoke coming out of the detector, wipe it with a clean cloth to remove smudges. Clean e-cigarette cartridge or atomizer coil. A carbon monoxide detector may need cleaning twice a year or when you have missed three consecutive readings without any problems.

    Annual battery replacement

It’s preferable to keep note of when you changed the batteries and respond appropriately rather than having to wait for that annoying beep. Set aside a day every year to go through your house and change the batteries in all of the detectors. Always choose safety over regret. If your detector starts and stops suddenly when you put it in operation, this will likely be an indication that the batteries are flat. Charge batteries before going to bed at night to ensure they take a full charge the next day.

    Check the detectors

Regular testing of your detectors is the best method to make sure they function as they should. Because carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless and can be dangerous to breathe in, co sensors, which test for it, should be inspected monthly. Once each month, smoke alarms can be inspected. The test buttons on both detectors are used for quick tests to make sure they are responsive. and functioning correctly. Look for these signs your carbon monoxide detectors are not working. The alarm does not sound and the batteries do not need to be replaced. Since you rely on these alarms for safety, this is a sign that they’re malfunctioning.

Make absolutely sure your detectors are placed properly.

Where your detectors are placed is something you might not have thought about. Each bedroom, confined space, and separate level should have a detector, but they also only work correctly under specific circumstances.  For example, if you have a detector at the foot of your bed, it only works when you’re sleeping.

Cooking equipment should be at least 10 feet away from any smoke detectors to avoid false alerts. A smoke detector’s effectiveness may be lowered if it is placed close to any doors, windows, or vents. Even more delicate than smoke detectors, CO detectors need to be protected from heat sources, humidity, dust, and extremely cold or hot temperatures.

    Investigate false alarms

Numerous factors can result in a false alarm. Don’t merely replace a detector if it starts to go off frequently; instead, look into the problem. A detector that triggers regularly can simply be in the wrong place, like too adjacent to the bathroom or the kitchen. It’s possible that the internal batteries need to be replaced or have come free. It’s also possible that the detector is simply dusty. Nevertheless, if none of these fixes stops the chirping, it’s time to buy a new detector. If you want to buy smoke alarms Australia has many stores where you can find a good device.

Keep the debris off of your detectors

Cleaning the interior and outside of every detector as you replace the batteries is crucial because dirty detectors might result in false alerts. Use a vacuum hose or an air compressor to remove dust and debris from the detector’s inside. With a moist towel, you can clean the detector’s exterior. A maintained detector saves you the headache of worrying about false alarms and ensures that it will only sound when it is supposed to. To clean the interior, use a damp stiff paper towel or a damp cloth. Do not use cotton; it could leave traces of unnecessary oils on the detector that can cause false alarms. As soon as you are finished, empty the dust from any grease and oil that might have been in contact with the inside of your detector.
