5 Ways to Measure Your Heart Rate — and Why it Matters

Several people have irregular heartbeats due to excessive consumption, high stress, inactivity, and dehydration. You can visit the best heart hospital in Delhi to get comprehensive treatment.

However, you must measure your heart rate at home to stay alert whether you are facing any heart issues. The different methods to measure your heart rate are as follows:

1. Radial Pulse

The steps to measure your radial pulse are as follows:

  • Put your pointers and middle fingers on your opposite wrist’s inside right below the thumb.
  • When you can feel your pulse, count the number of beats in 15 seconds.
  • Multiply the amount by 4 to find your heart rate. Suppose you can feel 20 beats in 15 seconds. Therefore, your heart rate is 80 beats per minute.

Do not use your thumb to check your pulse because the artery in your thumb makes it challenging to count accurately.

2. Pedal Pulse

Pedal pulse can be felt above your foot. Put your middle and index fingers at the highest point of the bone on top of your foot to feel it. You can obtain your heart rate the same way you can calculate it from your radial pulse.

3. Carotid Pulse

You can check your carotid pulse from your carotid artery. Keep your pointer and middle fingers on your windpipe’s side under the jawbone to feel your carotid pulse. Calculate your heart rate from your carotid pulse the same as your radial pulse.

4. Brachial Pulse

You can also check your heart rate at your brachial artery. In young children, the brachial pulse is often used for calculating the heart rate. The steps to calculate your heart rate from your brachial pulse are as follows:

  • Turn your arm to bend it slightly. Keep your inner arm faced toward the ceiling.
  • Put your index and middle fingers on the side of your arm. It should be between the crook of your elbow and above the pointy part of your elbow bone on the bottom side. Shift your fingers one inch above your arm.
  • When you start feeling the pulse, count the number of beats in 15 seconds.
  • Multiply the number of beats in 15 seconds by 4 to calculate your heart rate.

Remember that you have to press pretty firmly to feel your pulse.

5. Assisted Machine

You can use several assistive devices to track your heart rate:

  • Blood Pressure Devices

Blood pressure devices at home are beneficial for measuring your heart rate. The devices reveal your systolic and diastolic pressure along with your heart rate.

  • Smartwatch or Fitness Tracker

Fitness trackers or smartwatches are convenient for measuring your heart rate. They have long battery life and don’t take up much space. Moreover, they are comfortable and can be worn for a prolonged period.

They will help you calculate your heart rate throughout the day. Whether you are sleeping, performing daily activities, or exercising, you can wear these devices. They also offer you data in an easily comprehensible format.

The devices use optical technology to calculate the pulse on your wrist. The devices can send light to your skin and read the bounced back light.

  • Chest Straps

Chest straps are an economical device to calculate your heart rate. The chest straps function by decoding the small electric signals sent by your contracting heart to the entire body. Chest straps usually reveal your heart rate accurately.

However, chest straps can be uncomfortable because they wrap around the sternum. They need to be wrapped tightly, and the straps might slip off if it becomes loose. A chest strap might also cause chafing for staying tightly wrapped.

You won’t be able to adjust a chest strap while in motion. If you wear a faulty chest strap to a marathon or any other competition, it will cause trouble.

Moreover, a chest strap does not offer visual feedback during physical activities like a fitness tracker or smartwatch. You must have a tracker connected to Bluetooth somewhere else on your body.

  • Smartphone Apps

You always don’t need to purchase a separate accessory to measure your heart rate. Several smartphone apps can measure it. All apps do not provide accurate readings. But some apps are more efficient than others.

Why Is Measuring Your Heart Rate Necessary?

Tracking your heart rate is essential for understanding your fitness levels. It will reveal the condition of your heart and your stress levels.

It’s better to keep track of activities that increase your heart rate. If your heart rate is irregular, don’t hesitate to visit the best heart hospital in Delhi.

Summing up

Keeping track of your heart rate is crucial for leading a healthy life. Remember that irregular heartbeats can be an indicator of an underlying cardiac problem.
