    3. Carotid Pulse

    You can check your carotid pulse from your carotid artery. Keep your pointer and middle fingers on your windpipe’s side under the jawbone to feel your carotid pulse. Calculate your heart rate from your carotid pulse the same as your radial pulse. 

    4. Brachial Pulse

    You can also check your heart rate at your brachial artery. In young children, the brachial pulse is often used for calculating the heart rate. The steps to calculate your heart rate from your brachial pulse are as follows:

    • Turn your arm to bend it slightly. Keep your inner arm faced toward the ceiling.
    • Put your index and middle fingers on the side of your arm. It should be between the crook of your elbow and above the pointy part of your elbow bone on the bottom side. Shift your fingers one inch above your arm. 
    • When you start feeling the pulse, count the number of beats in 15 seconds.
    • Multiply the number of beats in 15 seconds by 4 to calculate your heart rate. 

    Remember that you have to press pretty firmly to feel your pulse.

    5. Assisted Machine 

    You can use several assistive devices to track your heart rate:

    • Blood Pressure Devices

    Chest straps are an economical device to calculate your heart rate. The chest straps function by decoding the small electric signals sent by your contracting heart to the entire body. Chest straps usually reveal your heart rate accurately. 

    However, chest straps can be uncomfortable because they wrap around the sternum. They need to be wrapped tightly, and the straps might slip off if it becomes loose. A chest strap might also cause chafing for staying tightly wrapped.

    You won’t be able to adjust a chest strap while in motion. If you wear a faulty chest strap to a marathon or any other competition, it will cause trouble. 

    Moreover, a chest strap does not offer visual feedback during physical activities like a fitness tracker or smartwatch. You must have a tracker connected to Bluetooth somewhere else on your body. 

    • Smartphone Apps

    You always don’t need to purchase a separate accessory to measure your heart rate. Several smartphone apps can measure it. All apps do not provide accurate readings. But some apps are more efficient than others.
